Project /2005 The Ubiquitous Universe of the Point Cloud

Explosive and Implosive Infinity. Imagine two neighboring cells of the human skin. Imagine now two camera's diving into the microscale of both at the same time. Soon they have lost sight of each other, divided by a vast space of molecules. Then imagine two neighboring molecules and dive into them deeply at the same time. then you will soon lose sight of the other camera, and become divided by a vast force field caused by atoms and their composing sub-atomic particles. You can repeat this procedure for ever, and find out over and over again that the deeper you travel into microscale, the more separated you become from your fellow travelling eye. The closer you come from the human point of view, the further apart from the local point of view. Taken to the extreme this implies that each possible focus point, where zoomed in to the max, opens up a window to an universe of an infinite number of interacting particles [as will be discussed later in this essay, I will propose to abandon the concept of particles completely, and to replace it by a form of computation processing dynamic relationships]. So the closer one gets from our point of view, the more infinite the space between. Seen from the human point of view you may conclude that you live on a temporally and locally articulated membrane between series of universes at the macroside, and multiple universes at the microside. This makes you wonder if these infinite universes possible could be connected somewhere as to meet in a giant loop. Travelling deep into the microworld would bring you at some point to the Universe As We Know It and you would find yourself travelling into milky ways and subsequently into planets, earth, people and human skin again. But it will not be the skin of the same human person, but one possible human skin out of a number of possible universes multiplied by the number of possible focus points to zoom into. Whatever we construct to have a closer look into the macro- and micro universes, it brings us exponentially growing numbers of possible universes. And it bring us exponentially more possible forms of life on exponentially different locations between the macro- and microscale. Life seen in this way enrolls itself at infinite small focus points creating infinite number of private wormholes. Private since you do share the macro-universe with other beings which are formed of a group of wormholes, but you definitely do not share your many micro-universes with any other being or CAS. Your private micro-universes are expanding endlessly inside your private wormholes. Seen from the point of view of your whole body, these wormholes natrt inside any possible molecule of your body. These private wormholes form portals to bring you into a truely unique micro-universe. That is, seen from there, since diving deeper into the micro-structure the universes are branching and multiplying again endlessly from there.

Diving into the future. Looking into the Universe As We Know It is equivalent to looking back in time. The light of the stars you see are obsolete information. It is the past which comes to us via that one big Universe we all are part of. Would it be defendable to suggest that looking into the molecules and beyond is equivalent to looking forward in time? Diving into the genetic structure of the human body for example would bring your to the point from where our life-form is computed. Changing some of the genes in the DNA sequence would bring about changes in the result, you would create a variation on the creature as we know it. You would change the future of how life will enroll itself. So basically you are looking into the future of Life, because it yet has to enfold. But you are not looking into the future of the constituting elements themselves. They remain unchanged. Suppose now we dive deeper into quark scale or beyond. Would changes being made on that level have influence on the genetic code some levels up? Probably not, it seems likely that these modified building blocks for the DNA string will simply not be recognized as such and not used by the genetic system of the human body.

Looking Back into the Past. Imagine yourself now at the level of the molecules, and look back into the past, back to the human body you are part of. Looking back one of more levels down would give you the impression of floating in a vast space, similar to what people see when they look into the starry skies. The absolute crucial thought here is that you would not be able to make a clear distinction between the different parts of the human body, or even between the human body itself and the air around the body. Seen from the point of view of the molecule it is experienced as one vast endless space. You do not seen a clear borderline between body and surrounding air. You might construct instruments and measure slight differences in the density of the vast space, you will need very special instruments to visualize the borderline if possible at all. Seen from the relative position of the molecule, looking back in time is looking into the Universe of your own body and beyond. Looking forward is looking into one of the many possible Universes, depending on which portal you choose to dive into. Looking inward into the future does not consume time, since human timescale in infinitely slow compared to the timescale of the micro-universe you are watching. It is only logical that also time is super-condensed in one the many possible micro-universes inside the molecule you have chosen as your portal into the future.

Floating Point Operation. Choosing a point of view is decisive for what you see from there. If you chose to temporarily fix your viewpoint at the Milky Way, you are not able to find the tiny Earth, a small invisible particle in the big body of the Milky Way. Making changes in the constitution of the Earth or even destroying the Earth will not change the behavior of the Milky Way. Seen in smaller band-with though exploding Earth would expectedly reformulate the solar system [which event more likely would be caused by the eventual eclipse of the Sun]. Speculating on what you see when looking outward into the past from there you might find the Milky Way to be a communicative player among other Milky Ways in some peer to peer communication network. Together they may swarm to temporarily form a larger body with a specific behavior, which already has been performed as such when you will be able to analyse it. Speculating on what you would see from there inwardly looking towards the future, you would probably not fancy something specific like the Earth. Statistically more likely it would seem that wherever you are looking at, either levels down in the past or levels up into the future, that you would stumble upon some very specific behavior of a swarm of peers. But you will not easily be able to grasp the meaning of it, since you simply do not have the dimensions available to you to understand and experience the meaning as seen from that particular level. Your Floating Point Operation would bring you there, but would not teach you the integrity of the level whereto you have displaced yourself. You would not understand the computation of the temporal and local system because it is not integral part of your own system.

Life As We Know It. This makes us realize that our form of life is extremely temporal and local. The temporality and locality of Life taken to the max may be condensed into one floating point: the ultimate Here and Now. The resolution of Life As We Know It must be equal then to the resolution of the smallest known discrete cells, starting from where time and space are computed. The actual phase in the computation of Life is registered inside each complex adaptive system [CAS]. The earth is such a CAS, people, cars, molecules, quarks, milky ways, computers, swarms of birds, institutions, cities, houses are such CAS's. All these CAS's in themselves can be regarded as particles in a particle system computing their existence in relation to other particles of a variety of such particle systems.

Constructing New Levels and Creating Meaningful Relations. The above sequence of popular scientific thoughts basically represents a Platonic way of ordering thoughts and evolve reasoning into the infinite [Plato, dialogues with Socrates, -100]. It is important for its possible effects on the way you design and construct in real time, which has been chosen as the leading theme for Protospace. Designing and constructing in real time includes the intellectual effort of displacing yourself one or two levels up, make proposals for the building blocks to generate your daily reality, and start computing reality from there. Protospace is based on the concept of the Programmable Point Cloud [Kas Oosterhuis, MIT lecture, 2004] of interacting particles and swarms. Particles which communicate with other particles are forming swarms, which communicate with other swarms and hence create meaning. Designing is a specific form of looking into the future of things to happen. Making changes there will changes the way things will enroll in the body of society.

Peer to Peer Groups [swarms]. Particles are not only members of one and the same swarm, they also function as members of different swarms depending on the environment in relation which they are computing their position at that particular time and location. Both living beings and products are regarded as computing devices calculating their position in real time. In the context of Protospace exactly this concept forms the basis for the construction of all relations between the particles and groups of particles and the players interacting with them. People are seen as information carriers, packing, transporting and subsequently unpacking strings of information [Kas Oosterhuis, Hyperbodies, 2003]. Groups of particles describing an architectural body or details of that body are seen and constructed as information carriers as well. In the Protospace environment all these various information carriers are calculating their position in real time. [more about this here]

Particles are the Smallest Building Blocks in Protospace. To label particles as particles is in the end a temporarily and locally organized Universe in itself. But for Protospace these particles are used as the smallest buildings blocks to start constructing possible future worlds. Each particle, whether it is a molecule, an atom or a quark, only looks like a particle from a distant point of view. Seen from inside the assumed particle is nowhere to be experienced as such. Seen from inside it would probably feel more like a meta-swarm of a myriad of interacting sub-swarms. Declaring particle as the smallest building blocks for Protospace means looking at the world from there. The particle is the Floating Point where you put you camera, from where you start the computation. The Programmable Point Cloud of interacting particles forms the basis for further computation into possible buildings and urban planning. Running the script on the particles means creating a past for the proposed CAS. Seen from the point of view of the in real time computing particle you may look some levels down into the past and experience your building construct. Once the script has executed its lines of code, the building has been constructed and can be viewed as a construct positioned in the past. When the script is still running you experience the Here and Now of the CAS. Before the script starts running and you are still proposing changes in the code, you are manipulating the future of your construct. Working in Protospace means changing script, running scripts and judging the outcome of the process in real time. Working in Protospace brings immediate pasts, presents and futures in one dynamic Group Design Room close together.
